5 Steps to Preserve Your Jewellery
-
"Last On, First Off" Rule:
Always put your jewellery on after applying perfumes, lotions, hairspray, and makeup. These products contain chemicals that can accelerate tarnishing and plating wear. Similarly, remove your jewellery before showering, swimming (especially in chlorinated or saltwater), exercising, or doing household chores.
-
Avoid Harsh Chemicals:
Direct contact with cleaning products, bleach, hand sanitizers, and even prolonged exposure to sweat can damage your jewellery's finish. It's best to remove rings and bracelets when washing hands or using cleaning agents.
-
Store Properly:
Store your jewellery in a clean, dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity. Ideally, keep pieces separate in individual pouches or compartments to prevent scratching and tangling. Ziplock bags can also work well to limit air exposure for plated items.
-
Gentle Cleaning is Key:
For most pieces, a soft, lint-free cloth is all you need to gently wipe away oils and dirt after each wear. For a deeper clean on plated items, use a very mild soap (like a diluted dish soap) and lukewarm water, then rinse thoroughly and dry immediately with a soft cloth. Never use abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals on plated jewellery.
-
Handle with Care:
Be mindful of your jewellery during daily activities. Avoid impacts against hard surfaces and excessive pulling or bending, which can weaken settings or cause damage to delicate chains.
A Note on Longevity:
Gold-Plated & Silver-Plated Jewellery: These pieces feature a thin layer of precious metal over a base metal. Over time, this plating can naturally wear off, revealing the underlying metal. This is a normal process that can be accelerated by friction, exposure to chemicals, and daily wear.
Stainless Steel Jewellery: While highly durable and resistant to tarnishing, stainless steel can still scratch or lose its polish with heavy use. It's an excellent choice for everyday wear but benefits from proper care.
The good news is, with a little care and attention, you can significantly extend the life and maintain the beautiful luster of your Maya Blue treasures!
